Son of embattled Mexican ex-governor found dead near border with US

PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Mexico – The son of an embattled former Mexican governor and political party leader has been found shot to death.

A relative of Humberto Moreira, who was president of the Institutional Revolutionary Party and governor of Coahuila state, says his son’s body was found Wednesday night in a rural area near Ciudad Acuna, across the border from Del Rio, Texas.

The relative who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal says Jose Eduardo Moreira lived in Ciudad Acuna where he worked for the state government led by his uncle, Ruben Moreira.

Coahuila state authorities didn’t respond to requests for comment.

Humberto Moreira resigned as party president earlier this year under the cloud of a $2.6 billion state government debt that accumulated when he was governor of Coahuila, financed at least in part by falsified documents.
