SECHELT, B.C. – Investigators say a man who was allegedly trying to conduct a fraudulent transaction at a bank in Sechelt died Tuesday after he fled on foot and was chased by RCMP officers.
The RCMP say officers were escorting the man to a car on Tuesday afternoon when he allegedly fled and was found in area of thick blackberry bushes.
When officers reached the man, the RCMP say he complained of breathing problems and collapsed.
He was later pronounced dead at hospital.
The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia has been notified of the man’s death.
The office, which reviews the conduct of the police in all incidents that result in serious harm or death, says the man was apprehended about 500 metres from where he initially fled.
