Getty museum’s associate director of collections retiring after 35 years with the institution

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The J. Paul Getty Museum’s associate director of collections says he will retire in October after 35 years with the institution.

Thomas Kren, who joined the Getty in 1980, was named founding curator of its department of manuscripts in 1984. He was named associate director of collections in 2012.

Getty Museum director Timothy Potts credits Kren with building the department of manuscripts into one of the most important collections in the nation.

He’ll continue to work with the museum as a guest curator.

Museum officials also announced Thursday that Richard Rand will succeed Kren as associate director of collections.

Rand is currently senior curator of paintings and sculptures at the Clark Art Institute in Washington, Massachusetts.
