Militia leader gets 53 years in Minnesota mosque bombing
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The leader of an Illinois anti-government militia group who authorities say masterminded the 2017 bombing of a Minnesota mosque has been sentenced to 53 years in prison for civil rights and hate crimes. Emily Claire Hari, who was previously known as Michael Hari and recently said she is transgender, was charged in the attack on Dar al-Farooq Islamic Center. No one was hurt in the bombing, but several members of the mosque community testified to the terror and trauma from the attack. They had sought a life sentence for Hari.

Judge weighs keeping Minneapolis police question on ballot
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A judge has promised to rule as soon as possible on whether to strike a revised version of a ballot question on the future of policing in Minneapolis in the wake of the death of George Floyd. The City Council updated the language last Tuesday, after Judge Jamie Anderson found that the old language was too vague. The proposal would remove a city charter requirement that Minneapolis have a police department and replace it with a Department of Public Safety whose functions would be defined later. An attorney for amendment opponents told Anderson at a hearing Monday the language remains misleading. Early voting begins Friday.

Man dies in fall from rocks at state park in Chisago County
TAYLORS FALLS, Minn. (AP) — Sheriff’s officials say a 39-year-old man died in a fall from some rocks at Interstate State Park in Chisago County. Authorities say the Hanover man was off the trail in a rocky portion of the park in Taylors Falls when he fell Saturday night. The Chisago County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as Nathan Darval. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin where he died. The incident remains under investigation.

George Floyd fund has awarded over $50,000 in scholarships
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A fund set up to honor George Floyd says it has awarded more than $50,000 in scholarships since it was created. The George Floyd Memorial Foundation says Monday that it has recently given scholarships to 15 law school students, scholarships to interns and undergraduate students, and $25,000 to Fayetteville State University. Foundation executive director Jacari Harris says these scholarships keep Floyd’s memory alive and provide needed support to students. The George Floyd Memorial Foundation was set up in August 2020 and focuses on promoting the awareness of racial injustices, police brutality and ensuring that everyone’s civil rights are protected. Floyd died in May of last year when a former Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck as he said he couldn’t breathe.

Authorities say 67% of northern Minnesota wildfire contained
ISABELLA, Minn. (AP) — Authorities say a vast majority of the Greenwood Lake wildfire in northern Minnesota is contained, one month after lighting ignited the blaze in the Superior National Forest. The U.S. Forest Service reported that the nearly 27,000-acre fire was 67% contained as of Sunday morning. The Forest Service had said last week that the fire was nearly half under control as hundreds of firefighters were still being dispatched to the area. The fire started Aug. 15 about 10 miles southwest of Isabella. It has destroyed 14 cabins and homes along with 57 outbuildings. Authorities say the fire is not expected to grow now that cooler weather is moving into the Great Lakes region.
TRIPLE SLAYING-WISCONSIN
Men accused in Wisconsin triple homicide plead not guilty
LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — Two men accused in a triple homicide in western Wisconsin in July have pleaded not guilty. Forty-four-year-old Khamthaneth Rattanasack and 33-year-old Nya Thao are each been charged with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. They’re accused in the execution-style shooting of three men outside the entrance of a Wisconsin quarry. The suspects on Friday waived their right to preliminary hearings. Both face life in prison if convicted. The bodies of 24-year-old Peng Lor, 24-year-old Nemo Yang and 23-year-old Trevor Maloney were discovered July 23 outside the Romskog Quarry near West Salem. West Salem is about 14 miles (23 kilometers) northeast of La Crosse, which is along the Minnesota border.
MOORHEAD HOMICIDE
Moorhead police say shooting death appears to be homicide
MOORHEAD, Minn. (AP) — Moorhead police say the are investigating shooting death as a homicide. Police said they responded to calls of gunshots about 8 p.m. Friday on the south side of the city. When officers arrived, a bystander was treating an adult victim. Emergency responders conducted medical care but resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful. No arrests have been made in the case. The name of the victim has not been released.
TRAIN STRIKES PEDESTRIAN
Man struck by train in Minneapolis expected to survive
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Authorities say a pedestrian was seriously injured but is expected to survive after being struck by a train in Minneapolis. Police responded to a report about 5:40 a.m. Sunday in the northeast part of the city and located a man with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The man was taken to an area hospital. Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway officials did not immediately respond to requests by the Star Tribune for comment. No further details were immediately available.
