The “Know Your Neighbour Walk” was started in 2012, by members of the local Sikh community honouring the birthdate of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, founder of the Sikhism, and his universal message of our common humanity. The Walk was initiated as a way of bringing peoples together in a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood, toward building bridges to mutual understanding and friendship – in the aftermath of a massacre by a white supremacist at a Sikh Temple in Wisconsin. Our commitment to inclusion, diversity, human rights, and secularism is strengthened in the face of rising prejudice, intolerance and hate crimes. The BLM, anti-hate and human rights movements, have brought increased focus on racism and the rise of hate groups and extremist ideologies. We invite peoples of all backgrounds, creeds, faiths and ethnicities to unite together in solidarity and friendly relations for human rights, equity, inclusion and strength in diversity.
In the spirit of the Walk, we invite and urge everyone to check on their Neighbours, in the spirit of caring, friendship and solidarity represented by “Know Your Neighbour Day”.
We are proud to promote the friendly and welcoming spirit of the City of Kamloops and look forward to organizing the biggest and most successful “Know Your Neighbour Day Walk” in 2024.
