Kamloops man jailed for possessing child sexual abuse material

A Kamloops man previous convicted for possessing child sexual abuse material has been sentenced to a two-year jail sentence within days of his arrest.

Kamloops RCMP searched the 23-year-old’s home last week and took him into custody that day.

“During that investigation, police officers located electronic devices that were capable of accessing the internet, in contradiction to the terms of the probation order he was bound by as a result of his previous conviction related to the possession of child sexual abuse material,” detachment spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a news release.

Stephen Timothy Bittner he was sentenced on Feb. 21, just two days after his arrest.

He pleaded guilty to breaching his probation conditions, which stemmed from convictions related to possessing child sex abuse material in 2021. He also admitted in court that he had such material again, RCMP said.

Cpl. Evelyn did not immediately respond when asked what prompted the search warrant, including whether his online activity was being monitored.

Bittner will serve a three-year probation order at the end of his jail sentence.
