Joe Fresh items made in Bangladesh factory that collapsed, killing more than 200

TORONTO – A factory that collapsed in Bangladesh killing more than 200 people made clothes for major brands around the world, including Canadian clothing line Joe Fresh.

Officials in Bangladesh say police had ordered an evacuation a day before, as deep cracks were visible in the walls, but more than 2,000 people kept working at the complex where clothes are produced for some North American retailers.

Joe Fresh parent company Loblaw (TSX:L) released a statement saying some Joe Fresh items were made in the factory and offered its condolences.

Loblaws says it has vendor standards, which ensure products are manufactured "in a socially responsible way, and specifically prohibiting child harassment and abuse or forced labour."

The company also says those standards ensure fair pay, benefits and compliance with applicable health and safety regulations.

Officials in Bangladesh say 218 people have been killed in the collapse and another 2,000 people have been rescued from the wreckage.
