POLL: Do you think racism is an issue in Kamloops and the Okanagan?
While many Canadians have been understandably moved to action by the death of George Floyd at the hands of police officers in Minneapolis and voicing support for Black Lives Matter in their fight against racism, are we so pure and clean in Canada?
One of Canada's most recognizable newspaper columnists has declared that Canada is not a racist country and he's been joined by many others who appear to ignore a long, violent, and tortured history with Indigenous peoples. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Canada has systemic racism that must be addressed.
But we're concerned about our own communities right now and we aren't limiting this question to any ethnicity.
Have you experienced or witnessed racism or know anyone else who has? As you consider these questions, turn then to this one: Is it enough of an issue that we should spend time and energy exploring it and repairing it locally?
