iN NUMBERS: What’s up with your garbage in Kamloops, Okanagan

Do you ever think about what happens to your trash after it gets picked up.

In case you just bring it to the curb and never think about it again, the government keeps track of what happens to it in Kamloops and the Okanagan.

Here are the numbers:

• 300: Tonnes of garbage arrive at the Glenmore Landfill in Kelowna every day.
• 23: Per cent of all waste going into Thompson-Nicola Regional District landfills comes from construction and demolition.
• 43: Kilograms of recycling collected per person in Okanagan-Similkameen in 2023.
• 3,824: Tonnes of recycling collected in North Okanagan in 2023.
• 49.5: Per cent of people in the Central Okanagan recycle properly, according to the regional district’s AI pilot program.
• 7,570: Mattresses and box springs went into the Vernon landfill in 2022.
• 19: Tonnes of batteries were recycled by Penticton’s Campbell Mountain Landfill in 2023, up by 14 tonnes from 2022.
• 6: months imprisonment is a possible punishment for littering, think about that next time a candy wrapper falls out of your pocket.
• 5,800: Tonnes of organic waste no longer sent to landfills in Kamloops after it started collecting organics.
