Police watchdog investigating Kamloops RCMP officer after woman was injured

The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. is looking into a police incident where a Kamloops woman was injured while an officer tried to disarm her.

Kamloops RCMP responded to a report that a woman had threatened a person known to her at a residential facility in the 1800-block of Greenfield Avenue.

The woman was running up and down the hallways of the building Oct. 14 around 4:30 p.m., according to a release.

When officers arrived, the woman was reportedly in possession of a weapon and an officer's attempt to disarm her resulted in her injury.

The woman was arrested but subsequently apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and assessment.

Kamloops RCMP learned the woman’s injuries were considered serious and the Independent Investigations Office of B.C. — the province's police watchdog — was notified Oct. 22.

The investigation will determine whether police actions are linked to the woman’s injury.
