Blue Jays put Jose Berrios on injured list for first time of his career

TORONTO — Jose Berrios is headed to the injured list for the first time in his 10-year Major League Baseball career.

Berrios already missed a scheduled start for the Toronto Blue Jays and will miss more time after being placed on the 15-day IL with inflammation in his right elbow.

Fellow pitcher Paxton Schultz was recalled from triple-A Buffalo and was active for the game against the Boston Red Sox at Rogers Centre.

Berrios was seen in his street clothes in the Blue Jays clubhouse hours before the game and Toronto manager John Schneider said he would have an MRI.

He has a 9-5 record this season with a 4.17 earned-run average, striking out 138 over a total of 166 innings.

Berrios has a 108-82 record over his career with a 4.08 ERA and 1,481 strikeouts between the Minnesota Twins and Blue Jays.
