Dog that survived horrific attack now has just days left to live
KELOWNA – She has defied the odds before, but this one she won't come back from—one of the two dogs that survived a horrific attack five months ago has developed terminal cancer and will be euthanized this week.
Sheena is a 10-year-old Rottweiler and one of three dogs subjected to a brutal late night attack with an edged weapon last September. Although she sustained serious trauma to the head, she was saved thanks to the efforts of a local veterinarian.
One-year-old Lola died from loss of blood and Rocky, who was only eight months old, lost an ear in the attack.
Now, just when owners Lyall Grexton and Charlene Wiebe were getting back to normal, they found a growth inside her mouth.
“(The cancer) is on the upper jaw on the left side near the back of the mouth,” Burtch Animal Hospital vet Dr. Jatinder Mundi says. “It’s spreading all through the body.”
He says because of her age, trying to save her with surgery and chemotherapy is impractical.
“She is losing the body weight so we were keeping her on the palliative medicine,” he says. “It’s in her best interest (to euthanize). There is no quality of life there.”
Meanwhile, Grexton and Wiebe are still waiting for some kind of resolution for the attack. They believe the person who attacked their dogs was the same man who, just days prior, assaulted Grexton in a parking lot and on Monday was forbidden by the courts from having any contact with them for 12 months.
Grexton says the court order doesn’t go far enough though and wonders why charges were dropped.
“He was up for the assault and uttering threats,” he says. “The police phoned me last Friday and said the charges had been stayed but I can’t find out why.”
Grexton says knowing the attacker is a free man has them living in fear.
“It just never goes away,” he says. “I still wake up in the middle of the night and can’t go back to sleep. We’re both totally affected by it.”
An appointment to euthanize Sheena is now set for this Friday and Grexton says although they wish there was another option, they know they are doing the right thing for her.
“It’s extremely sad,” he says. “We’ve had her since she was a year old and now we have to say goodbye. I guess we’ll just have to wait for karma because the cops and the courts don’t seem to want to do anything. I wonder if this would be their response if it was a police dog that was attacked.”
Crown counsel refused to comment on why charges were stayed.
Clifford Joseph Robinson is forbidden from contacting either Lyall Grexton or Charlene Wiebe, from attending their homes and places of work, and must keep the peace and be of good behavior for 12 months. If he breaks any of his conditions he will have to pay $500 and could be charged with a criminal offence.

I had a cat years ago who developed a huge tumor in his stomach.So big that food couldn’t get past it.He went from 13 pounds to 6.At the age of 12 I was advised to euthanize him because he also had FIV, and the three Vets I consulted (Angell Memorial Boston was one), said with his compromised immune system, chemo would kill him anyway.I decided that since he was going to die anyway, I would give chemo a short trial.If I didn’t see improvement fairly quickly, I would let him go.After one month of chemo, the tumor shrunk to almost nothing, he was eating like a little piggy, and within two months had gained all his weight back.He went on to live for six more years.I don’t know, if you believe in God, but the Vets all said it was a miracle granted by God.They had no other explanation.I’m not saying this to make you feel bad, and your dog’s situation may be different, but I’m glad I gave Morris a second chance at life.Only you know what’s best for your dog, and if you go ahead with her euthanasia, I’m sure you will have made the right decision for her.You know her best.Prayers and hugs, lots of love, whatever happens.

Seeing this , makes me realise just what a very sick world we live in.We can’t call the perpitraitors of such heinous acts as this, ‘animals’, because as far as I am aware , there isn’t one animal on the face of this earth, who would do such a thing , they are merely sub-humans, who destroy all that is good , given the opportunity.What makes it worse, is the fact that the laws of the land, give far too much leniency to those who are brought before them, which is hardly adeterent.In a perfect world, i should like to be a judge with free rein, to administer any punishment I chose.for an act such as this, the guilty party would be birched , then receive a lengthy sentence, sharing a cell with an animal rights activist , capable ofadministering physical violence to the said pervert..

I cannot imagine how these people feel. This is so very wrong on so many levels. The evil individual that did this was obviously unstable – who knows what else he is capable of? What kind of evil attacks innocent animals (and people), especially an old family dog, as well as killing a young pup. These animals were defenceless and trusting.

use food grade peroxide; few drops in her water will kill cancer…also alkalize her food and water.

I don’t understand why his charges were stayed, just who does he know that he is able to walk away from an assault charge like this? Not only should the charges stand but if he is responsible for the dog attack he should be charged in that as well.

so sorry to read about your dog. he will go to the rainbow bridge and be free of pain. I can just see the fun he will have playing with his friends. I hope the man who attacks you and the dogs gets his when his times come up. I am sure he will not be happy to see where he ends up when he dies.

Poor Sheena, after surviving the horrible attack, now cancer. I don’t normally wish cancer on anyone but I hope the “suspect” in the attack gets stricken with every form possible. How anyone could do what he did to defenseless dogs is totally beyond me. And to think he’s getting away with it… who or what is next? It blows my mind! Power to you Lyall and Char!
