Free speech examined at Philosopher’s Cafe

KELOWNA – A local professor will discuss the challenges and importance of free speech in Canada at a Wednesday evening event in Kelowna.

Andrew Irvine, a UBC professor and past president of the B.C. Civil Liberties Association, will be speaking at the Philosopher’s Cafe at the Okanagan Jewish Community Centre.

His talk, Where to Draw the Line, will look at the current state of Canadian law when it comes to free speech and other fundamental democratic freedoms. Irvine will discuss several recent events as well as some landmark Supreme Court of Canada cases.

The free event will begin at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the community centre on Snowsell Street North in Kelowna.
