Sabres’ Tuch scores in overtime to spoil Oilers spirited comeback

EDMONTON — Alex Tuch scored the winner just 33 seconds into overtime as the Buffalo Sabres got a rare road win, coming away with a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday.

Josh Doan had a pair of goals and Tage Thompson had a goal and two assists for the Sabres (12-14-4), who snapped a three-game losing skid and improved to 3-9-2 on the road. Rasmus Dahlin had three assists.

Connor McDavid had a pair of goals, including one with two seconds left in the third to force overtime, and Vasily Podkolzin also scored for the Oilers (13-11-6) who had a modest two-game winning streak halted.

Colten Ellis saved all six shots he faced in the Sabres’ net before leaving the game late in the first due to an injury and being replaced by Alex Lyon, who made 21 saves. Stuart Skinner made 24 stops in goal for Edmonton.

TAKEAWAYS

Sabres: Doan has been on a bit of a roll of late. The 23-year-old Arizona native has seven points (3G, 4A) in his last six games. In addition, Thompson moved into a tie with of Tuch for the team lead with 26 points. Thompson is just the fifth Sabres player to score 40 goals or more in a calendar year on more than one occasion.

Oilers: Since the beginning of November, McDavid now has 30 points (13G, 17A) in 18 games.

KEY MOMENT

Edmonton tied the game with just two seconds remaining in the third period after surviving a late short-handed situation as McDavid rifled in his second of the game and 16th of the season during a mad scramble. However the Sabres won it just 33 seconds into overtime as two players committed to Ryan McLeod, who spotted Tuch all alone in front and he scored his 11th.

KEY STAT

For some reason the Oilers seem to struggle with Buffalo. Not only were they humbled 5-1 by the Sabres in Buffalo on Nov. 17, they have only managed to go 8-7-5 against them in their last 20 games despite the large disparity in their overall records during that time span.
