Canada’s trip to the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup did not help its world ranking.
The Canadian women fell two places to No. 76 after failing to reach the knockout round at the recent 16-country tournament in the Philippines in the wake of losses to No. 2 Spain, No. 7 Colombia and No. 8 Thailand.
The top three in the rankings are unchanged, with Brazil, which blanked Portugal 3-0 in the Dec. 7 World Cup final, ahead of Spain and Portugal. Brazil won all six of its outings at the World Cup, outscoring the opposition 32-4.
Argentina and Italy each jumped two places to No. 4 and 5, respectively. Czechia and Tanzania both rose eight places to No. 37 and No. 74, respectively, while Morocco climbed seven spots to No. 24.
Futsal is a five-a-side indoor game played in two 20-minute halves.
FIFA’s first edition of the women’s futsal rankings came out in May 2024 with Canada not entering until August 2025, the most recent edition prior to Friday’s new numbers, at No. 74.
Lack of international play has not helped the Canadian women in the rankings.
The number of teams included in the FIFA women’s rankings has increased to 91 from 69 in the first edition.
The Canadian women rank sixth in CONCACAF despite winning the inaugural CONCACAF W Futsal Championship in May, defeating No. 87 Honduras, the 75th-ranked U.S. and No. 79 Panama en route to the title — after opening with a loss to No. 28 Costa Rica.
Canada slipped one place to No. 71 in the new men’s futsal ratings. The top five are unchanged with Brazil leading Portugal, Spain, Argentina and Iran.
South Korea Republic (No. 57, up 16), Montenegro (No. 78, up 16), Mozambique (No. 85, up 12), Denmark (No. 61, up 11) and Malaysia (No. 70, up 11) all made big moves in the men’s rankings, which include 139 teams.
