iN NUMBERS: BC is Canada’s least religious province

With Jesus’ birthday behind us, let’s take a look at how many people embraced the religious side of the holiday in B.C., and how many focus more on the presents and cookies.

Religion is still important to a lot of British Columbians, but more people prioritize family, while affluence landed at the bottom of the priority list.

Research Co. surveyed how many people identify as religious or not, and B.C. has the highest percentage of people who are atheist, agnostic or irreligious.

Here are the results from the survey:

• 40: Per cent of British Columbians describe themselves as Christian, including Catholic and Protestant. The lowest percentage of any province.
• 56: Per cent of people in the Maritimes describe themselves as Christian. The highest percentage of any region.
• 20: Per cent of British Columbians said they are atheist or agnostic.
• 29: Per cent of British Columbians said they never go to religious gatherings at churches, temples or synagogues.
• 15: Per cent of British Columbians go to a religious gathering once a week.
• 22: Per cent of Gen X said they aren’t spiritual at all.
• 14: Per cent of Gen Z said they aren’t spiritual at all.
• 25: Per cent of Canadians said religion is very important to them.
• 44: Per cent of Americans said religion is very important to them.
• 75: Per cent of British Columbians said family is very important to them, making it the highest rated answer for what’s important to people in the province.
• 26: Per cent of British Columbians said religion is very important to them.
• 12: Per cent of British Columbians said affluence is very important to them, making it the lowest rated answer for what’s important to people in the province.
