iN NUMBERS: BC divided on immigration as national opinion sours

Immigration is generally a hot-button topic, but over the last few years, Canadians’ view on immigration has grown more negative.

It’s likely top of mind these days with news about violent immigration enforcement constantly crossing the border from the U.S.

Here are the numbers from a recent Research Co. poll:

• 43: Per cent of British Columbians think immigration has a mostly negative effect in Canada.
• 38: Per cent of British Columbians think immigration has a mostly positive effect in Canada.
• 18: Per cent of British Columbians aren’t sure how immigration affects Canada.
• 26: per cent of Canadians described immigration in a negative light in 2022.
• 48: Per cent of Canadians currently describe immigration in a negative light.
• 42: Per cent of British Columbians think Canada should allow fewer immigrants into the country.
• 80: Per cent of British Columbians think the hard work and talent of immigrants make Canada better.
• 69: Per cent of British Columbians think immigrants should only be allowed in Canada if they adopt Canadian values.
• 41: Per cent of British Columbians think Canada should be a melting pot where immigrants assimilate and blend into Canadian society.
• 50: Per cent of British Columbians think Canada should be a mosaic where cultural differences are valued and preserved.
