Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and Liam Draxl bounced out of first round of Miami Open

MIAMI — Canada’s Denis Shapovalov and Liam Draxl were both eliminated in the first round of the men’s singles tournament of the Miami Open on Thursday.

Shapovalov dropped a 7-5, 6-3 decision to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands before Draxl lost to France’s Quentin Halys 7-6(4), 6-1, 6-1.

Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., fought off four match points before finally falling in one hour 31 minutes.

The 24-year-old Draxl, from Newmarket, Ont., was a qualifier in the ATP Tour event. Halys got 13 aces past Draxl to the Canadian’s four.

Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriel Diallo, both from Montreal, were also entered in the main draw of the Masters 1000 tournament.

The women’s singles draw includes Victoria Mboko of Burlington, Ont., and Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que.

Competition continues through March 29.
