Mboko, Andreeva advance in Miami Open women’s doubles, Fernandez bounced from singles

MIAMI — Canada’s Victoria Mboko and Mirra Andreeva of Russia could have an awkward week.

The pair beat Australia’s Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs of the Netherlands 7-6 (7), 6-3 on Sunday in the Round of 32 in the women’s doubles tournament at the Miami Open.

Mboko, from Burlington, Ont., and Andreeva will face each other in the Round of 16 in the singles tournament on Monday.

They will reunite on the doubles court for a Round of 16 match against Australia’s Storm Hunter and Jessica Pegula of the United States.

Earlier Sunday, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., lost to Pegula 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 32 of the women’s singles tournament.

Fernandez and all-time great Venus Williams of the U.S., lost a heartbreaker to New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe and American Asia Muhammad in a Round of 32 women’s doubles match later Sunday.

Fernandez and Williams won the opening set 6-3, but the sixth-seeded Routliffe and Muhammad bounced back with 6-3, 13-11 wins to take the best-of-three match.

Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime will face France’s Terence Atmane in a Round of 32 match in the men’s singles tournament on Monday.
