Rare sighting on Anarchist Mountain near Osoyoos: Cupid Sasquatch

There is a most unusual sight awaiting motorists travelling Highway 3 east of Osoyoos as Valentine’s Day approaches.

Near the top of Anarchist Mountain is Osoyoos Mountain Estates, a residential development accessed by a number of roads branching off of Highway 3.

The development roads are named after local wildlife, such as Bighorn Estates, Raven Hill estates, etc.

They are easily identified by life-like statues of bighorn sheep, cougar, mule deer, bull moose, etc., located at the intersections of the subdivision roads and Highway 3.

One neighbourhood is named after a well-known but more mythical creature – Sasquatch Trail.

Local resident and photographer Ron Hiller recently snapped the photos of the legendary beast – ready to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

The Sasquatch Valentine’s day garb was provided by another resident of Osoyoos Mountain Estates, who asked for anonymity.

The resident 'decorator' says the Sasquatch is a fun target for dressing up. It has become somewhat of a tradition, and the statue was last ‘dressed’ over Christmas as the Grinch.

“He’s a lot bigger than he looks from the street. He’s a challenge to dress. He’s tall, with a 60 inch head circumference and a 90 inch waist,” the resident says. “Somebody on our street started this a while ago, but she moved, and I took over the box of costumes she created for the Sasquatch.”

Another neighbour who also wished to remain anonymous, designed this year’s Valentine Sasquatch costume.

“We put it together, and he’s getting lots of smiles from community members and those on the highway. That’s what we were trying to do,” the resident says.
