iN NUMBERS: The hot, dry April in the Okanagan and Kamloops

The entire Okanagan Valley might as well be considered a desert at this point. Unless you’re sitting on a beach with a margarita, it’s too hot and too dry. A mild, dry winter is giving way to a warm and dry spring in Kamloops and the Okanagan.

Here are the numbers:

  • 1.6: Millimetres, 12 per cent of normal, that’s how much precipitation fell in Kamloops in April.
  • 7.8: Millimetres, 27 per cent of normal, that’s how much precipitation fell in Kelowna in April.
  • 5.6: Millimetres, 22 per cent of normal, that’s how much precipitation fell in Vernon in April.
  • 5.4: Millimetres, 21 per cent of normal, that’s how much precipitation fell in Penticton in April.
  • 1: Daily temperature record was broken in the region in April. It was a balmy 24 C on April 10 in Kamloops.
  • 2: Cities were in their top ten warmest Aprils of all time in the Southern Interior, Kamloops and Kelowna.
  • 11.4: Celsius, 1.5 C above normal, that was the average monthly temperature in Kamloops in April.
  • 10.2: Celsius, 1.5 C above normal, that was the average monthly temperature in Vernon in April.
  • 10.4: Celsius, 1.1 C above normal, that was the average monthly temperature in Kelowna in April.
  • 9.9: Celsius, 0.8 C above normal, that was the average monthly temperature in Penticton in April.
  • 58: Per cent or normal, that’s where the Okanagan’s snowpack was as of April 1.
  • 6: Municipalities have water restrictions, many of those are regularly scheduled to begin in May.
