Sharp-eyed citizens help Kamloops RCMP chase down wanted man

A man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant was arrested in Kamloops on Tuesday after a chase that involved sightings from the public, officers with the heavily-armed emergency response team and a child’s bicycle.

Members with the Kamloops RCMP crime reduction unit spotted the man driving a stolen pickup truck in the Sahali area, May 12, according to an RCMP media release.

RCMP say the man initially got away on a bicycle but later spotted him and a foot chase ensued. During the pursuit the suspect stole a kid’s bicycle.

“Police maintained containment and continued coordinated search efforts, ultimately locating and safely arresting him without further incident,” RCMP said in the release.

The stolen pickup truck and bicycle were recovered.

Kurtis Billy, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant, is in custody at the Kamloops Regional Correction Centre waiting for a court appearance. He’s facing outstanding charges and will likely face more charges arising from the police chase.

Anyone with information is asked to call Kamloops RCMP at 250-828-3000, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
