Carson Kelly drives in 4 as the Cubs beat White Sox 10-5

CHICAGO (AP) — Carson Kelly hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning and drove in four runs as the Chicago Cubs stopped a five-game White Sox winning streak with a 10-5 victory over their crosstown rival on Friday night.

Before a crowd of 38,723, the first home sellout for the White Sox this season, the Cubs went ahead to stay after wasting leads of 1-0 and 4-1.

Kelly had an RBI single in the fourth, a bases-loaded infield against Bryan Hudson (1-1) in the seventh that put the Cubs ahead for good at 5-4 and a two-run double in a four-run eighth that built a 10-4 lead.

Jarred Kelenic hit his first home run for the White Sox, a 446-foot drive in the ninth off Javier Assad.

Trent Thornton (2-0) struck out two in two perfect innings.

The Cubs had 14 hits. Seiya Suzuki stopped an 0-for-17 slide with an RBI single that put the visitors ahead 4-1.

Colson Montgomery, Miguel Vargas and Kelenic hit solo homers for the White Sox.

White Sox reliever Jordan Hicks walked four and allowed four runs while getting two outs in the eighth.

NATIONALS 3, ORIOLES 2

WASHINGTON (AP) — Daylen Lile homered for the fourth time in his last four games, Zack Littell tossed five scoreless innings in his best start of the season and Washington held on to beat Baltimore.

Lile, who had three hits and finished a triple shy of the cycle, hit two homers in Cincinnati on Tuesday and another Wednesday before going 0 for 4 on Thursday. Lile is batting .378 (14 for 37) with four doubles, four homers, 10 RBIs and eight runs scored in his last 10 games.

Littell allowed two hits, walked two and struck out three while lowering his ERA from 6.94 to 6.10.

Andrew Alvarez, recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Friday, pitched three-plus innings before Gus Varland relieved him with runners on first and second with no outs in the ninth. After pinch-hitter Leody Taveras walked to load the bases and Colby Mayo struck out, Jeremiah Jackson’s sacrifice fly made it 3-1 — preventing Baltimore from being shut out for the first time this season.

Gunnar Henderson greeted Richard Lovelady with an RBI single that moved the tying run to third. Taylor Ward walked, but Lovelady struck out Adley Rutschman to end it for his second save.

PHILLIES 11, PIRATES 9, 10 INNINGS

PITSBURGH (AP) — Red-hot slugger Kyle Schwarber homered twice to boost his majors-leading total to 20 and Philadelphia rallied to beat Pittsburgh in 10 innings.

Philadelphia trailed by six early. Schwarber led the comeback, smashing a pair of two-run homers. The designated hitter went deep off Braxton Ashcraft in the fifth and again off Mason Montgomery in the seventh.

Schwarber has nine home runs in the past eight games, the second time in his career he’s achieved that feat. He also did it in 2021 while playing for Washington. Albert Belle is the only other player in MLB history to hit nine homers in an eight-game stretch twice.

The Pirates were so wary of Schwarber while holding onto a three-run lead in the ninth that closer Gregory Soto walked him on four pitches with the bases loaded. Bryce Harper followed with a two-run single off the top of the wall in right center to pull Philadelphia even.

The Phillies pounced on Pirates reliever Dennis Santana (2-3) in the 10th. Brandon Marsh led off with an RBI single and Rafael Marchán followed with a two-run single. Jose Alvarado (1-1) pitched a scoreless ninth. Orion Kerkering worked the 10th for his first save as Philadelphia won for the fifth time in six games to improve to 13-4 since Don Mattingly replaced Rob Thomson as manager last month.

Brandon Lowe homered twice for the Pirates. Marcell Ozuna added a 438-shot to the Pirates’ bullpen that reliever Yohan Ramirez caught with a traffic cone.

TIGERS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

DETROIT (AP) — Spencer Torkelson drove in the winning run with an RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning and Detroit snapped a three-game losing streak by edging Toronto.

Matt Vierling reached on a bloop single with one out and stole second after Gage Workman struck out. Jeff Hoffman (2-3) intentionally walked left-handed hitting Zach McKinstry to face the righty Torkelson, who spoiled that strategy with his opposite-field hit.

Riley Greene had an RBI double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games, the longest active run in the majors. He has also reached base safely in a career-high 25 consecutive games.

Dillon Dingler reached base three times and scored a run. Drew Anderson allowed only one hit in four innings of scoreless relief and Kenley Jansen (1-2) pitched the ninth for the victory.

Starter Trey Yesavage allowed two runs and struck out six in six innings, but had three wild pitches for the defending AL champion Blue Jays, who have lost eight of 11 and are 19-25 this season. Andres Gimenez knocked in both of Toronto’s runs with a double.

RAYS 7, MARLINS 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Cedric Mullins homered and singled three times in four at-bats to help AL East-leading Tampa Bay beat Miami for its 11th victory in 13 games.

Tampa Bay has won 11 straight at home.

Mullins also stole a base. He had his most hits since May 21, 2023, when he had five while with Baltimore.

After Yandy Díaz’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first, the scrappy Rays built a 4-1 lead with two second-inning hustle plays. Richie Palacios turned an elusive pop fly into a double and Mullins moved him to third by beating out a bunt.

Palacios scored on Hunter Feduccia’s sacrifice fly. Mullins, who stole second and took third on Feduccia’s out, sprinted home on Taylor Walls’ weak chopper to first.

Feduccia and the Rays were robbed of back-to-back homers in the sixth by their own ballpark. Following Mullins’ solo shot, the catcher launched Janson Junk’s fastball into right center, but the hit ricocheted off the Tropicana Field catwalk and fell to the turf for a ground-rule double.

Tampa Bay opener Ian Seymour needed nine pitches in the first inning and retired the first five Marlins before Connor Norby’s second-inning homer. Jesse Scholtens (4-2) took over in the third and threw five strong innings in relief. Miami center fielder Jakob Marsee (3 for 4) gave Scholtens his only blemish, a sixth-inning homer.

REDS 7, GUARDIANS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) — Matt McLain drove in three runs and Cincinnati survived a brutal inning by its bullpen as the Reds snapped a seven-game road losing streak with a win over Cleveland in the first meeting between Ohio’s teams this year.

Cincinnati seemed on the way to an easy victory when McLain hit a two-run homer in the eighth to make it 6-1.

But things got messy as Reds reliever Graham Ashcraft walked the bases loaded and Travis Bazzana hit an RBI single to pull Cleveland within 6-2. Brock Burke came on and got a strikeout, but forced in two runs with a pair of bases-loaded walks.

José Ramírez’s sacrifice fly made it 6-5. The Guardians drew four four-pitch walks in the inning.

The Reds got an insurance run in the ninth on JJ Bleday’s fielder’s choice.

Tejay Antone gave up a run in the ninth before second baseman McLain made a diving stop in the outfield grass and threw out Bazzana for the final out. It was Antone’s first save since May 30, 2021. The right-hander has undergone three Tommy John surgeries.

Reds starter Andrew Abbott (3-2) extended his scoreless streak to 21 2/3 innings — and 19 against Cleveland — before giving up a home run to Rhys Hoskins in the sixth.

BREWERS 3, TWINS 2

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Aaron Ashby became the major leagues’ first eight-game winner, helped when an interference call on Twins third baseman Royce Lewis allowed the tying run to score in a two-run eighth inning, and Milwaukee beat Minnesota for its seventh win in eight games.

Minnesota led 2-1 in the eighth when singles by Jackson Chourio and Brice Turang against Andrew Morris (1-2) put runners on the corners and Turang stole second.

With the infield in, William Contreras hit a sharp grounder to shortstop Brooks Lee, who threw to third where Lewis tagged Chourio sliding back into the base. Third base umpire Jordan Baker signaled out but after conferring with his crew ruled Lewis had used his right foot to leave Chourio no path to the base.

Chourio was allowed to score on the interference. Twins manager Derek Shelton came out to argue and was ejected by Baker, his third ejection this season.

Bauers doubled, driving in Chourio with the go-ahead run.

BRAVES 3, RED SOX 2, 10 INNINGS

ATLANTA (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski led off the 10th inning with a single to left field to score automatic runner Ha-Seong Kim, and major league-best Atlanta defeated Boston.

Didier Fuentes (3-0) pitched the 10th and retired Mickey Gasper on a line drive to shortstop with two runners on to end the inning.

Rookie Tyler Samaniego (0-2) worked the 10th for the Red Sox, who have lost four of five and have not scored more than three runs in a game during that stretch.

Drake Baldwin and Michael Harris II homered for the Braves, who have won five of six and improved to 15-7 at home.

Spencer Strider, in his third start this season, allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings. He was helped out by catcher Sandy León, who threw out two Red Sox base stealers. Strider has given up just one run in his last two starts.

Boston’s Marcelo Mayer homered in the seventh to tie the game at 2-all.

Braves closer Raisel Iglesias stranded two runners in a 20-pitch ninth that extended his scoreless streak to 13 2/3 innings this season and 26 1/3 dating back to last season.

YANKEES 5, METS 2

NEW YORK (AP) — Cam Schlittler overpowered the New York Mets in his Subway Series debut, carrying a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning as the New York Yankees breezed to a victory at Citi Field.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. laced a two-run double off former Yankees closer Clay Holmes in a three-run third, and Ben Rice added his 14th homer in the ninth. Cody Bellinger had an RBI double and rookie Spencer Jones provided an RBI single for the Yankees, who improved to 2-5 on their nine-game trip.

In the opener of a three-game series, Schlittler (6-1) struck out nine and walked two over 6 2/3 innings — keeping his AL-best ERA at 1.35 in his second major league season. He threw 106 pitches, his most in a regular-season game, and 71 were strikes.

The 25-year-old right-hander was in complete command until ex-Yankees slugger Juan Soto launched his 250th career homer on an 0-2 fastball leading off the seventh.

Fernando Cruz retired rookie A.J. Ewing with runners at second and third to end the inning, then worked a 1-2-3 eighth. David Bednar allowed an RBI single to Brett Baty in the ninth.

Other than Soto’s drive and Baty’s two-out single in the second, the light-hitting Mets, who have struggled against high velocity all season, were no match for Schlittler’s 96-99 mph heat.

ASTROS 2, RANGERS 0

HOUSTON (AP) — Spencer Arrighetti took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, Isaac Paredes homered and Houston.

Arrighetti (5-1) struck out five and walked four before Rangers rookie Justin Foscue ended the no-hit bid with one out in the eighth with a single to left field on Arrighetti’s 102nd and final pitch of the night.

Arrighetti’s ERA is 1.50 through six starts after beginning the season with Triple-A Sugar Land.

Bryan King finished the inning by getting Joc Pederson to fly out to right field and then catcher Christian Vazquez picked off Foscue at first base with Ezequiel Duran at the plate.

King retired the side in order in the ninth for his fourth save.

Paredes’ solo homer in the third gave Houston the lead. And that was the game’s only run until Braden Shewmake extended his career-high hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI single in the eighth.

DIAMONDBACKS 9, ROCKIES 1

DENVER (AP) — Merrill Kelly threw his first career complete game, Ildemaro Vargas was 4 for 5 with a double and two RBIs and Arizona beat Colorado.

Kelly (3-3) allowed four hits and had three strikeouts without a walk. The 37-year-old right-hander threw 100 pitches, 73 for strikes, in the fourth complete game in the majors this season.

Gabriel Moreno drove in three runs, and Ryan Waldschmidt had two RBIs as Arizona opened a stretch of 13 games against only the Rockies and San Francisco Giants. The Diamondbacks are 21-22.

Moreno and Corbin Carroll added two hits apiece, and Nolan Arenado went 1 for 1 with an RBI double and four walks.

Vargas hit a run-scoring single that sparked Arizona’s six-run first inning.

Colorado’s Kyle Freeland (1-5) gave up seven runs and eight hits and walked four in 3 2/3 innings.
