Florida State softball star Isa Torres announces she’s entering transfer portal

Florida State shortstop Isa Torres, one of the nation’s top college softball players, has announced she’s entering the transfer portal.

Torres was named the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year by the league’s head coaches, and she was selected as the national player of the year by D1Softball. She was one of three finalists for the USA Softball national player of the year award that went to Nebraska pitcher Jordy Frahm.

“This decision is not about leaving something behind,” Torres said Monday in her social media post. “It is about pursuing a new opportunity and embracing a new challenge. My respect, appreciation and love for Florida State remain unchanged.”

Torres batted .530 as a junior to break her own Florida State single-season record while hitting 16 homers and 56 RBIs as the Seminoles went 52-10 and lost to Central Florida in an NCAA regional. Torres also set school single-season records in on-base percentage (.591), slugging percentage (.978) and runs (78).

She set an NCAA Division I record in March by getting hits in 16 consecutive at bats. During that stretch, she also reached base on 23 straight plate appearances.

Torres said she opted to enter the portal “after a great deal of thought, prayer and conversations with my family.” Torres called it “one of the most difficult decisions I have ever had to make” in a post that included tributes to her Florida State coaches and teammates as well as the school’s fan base.

“No matter where my journey takes me next, a piece of my heart will always belong to Florida State,” Torres said.
