Other ways to get oil exports to Asia without Northern Gateway: Trudeau

CALGARY – Liberal leadership contender Justin Trudeau says he’s in favour of exporting Canadian oil to Asia — as long as it’s not through the controversial Northern Gateway pipeline.

On a visit to Calgary, Trudeau reiterated his concerns that a proposed pipeline by Enbridge Inc. isn’t supported by aboriginal groups and would cross sensitive terrain.

He says there are other ways for oil exports to get to the West Coast.

Kinder Morgan is planning an expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline to the B.C. Lower Mainland, although there’s been some opposition to that project, too.

Trudeau has also come out in favour of a Chinese state-owned company’s multi-billion takeover of Nexen Inc. (TSX:NXY).

He says foreign investment creates jobs in Canada and a Nexen deal would strengthen relations with China, the world’s second-largest economy.

Trudeau was visiting with supporters at the campaign headquarters of Calgary Centre byelection candidate Harvey Locke.
