Lost skier rescued on Cypress Mountain as forecast calls for high avalanche risk
WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. – A lost skier who called 911 from a gully on Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver has been rescued just as the forecast calls for a high avalanche risk in many parts of B.C. this weekend.
Police say the woman in her early 40s missed a turn and got off a trail Friday afternoon.
Sgt. Ed Pearce of the West Vancouver Police Department says the woman was found less than two hours after she called for help on a day that brought on-and-off snow on the mountain.
Pearce says the woman stayed put as she waited for members of the North Shore Search and Rescue team, which found her before dark, when the temperature would have plummeted.
She was also well prepared and had a helmet, water and food, along with a phone.
The Canadian Avalanche Centre is advising people not to trek onto some mountains this weekend because of the increased risk of avalanches.
