Prime Minister Harper heads to London for funeral of Margaret Thatcher

OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper left for London early today to pay his respects to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

The prime minister is travelling with his wife Laureen, former prime minister Brian Mulroney, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird and London-West MP Ed Holder.

Thatcher, who died last Monday at the age of 87, will be given a funeral with military honours at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday.

Much of Mulroney’s time in office coincided with Thatcher’s. He was prime minister from 1994-1993 while Thatcher served from 1979-1990.

Security in London Wednesday is likely to be even stronger than originally planned in the wake of Monday’s twin bombings at the Boston Marathon.

Though not an official state funeral, Tuesday’s service is expected to be the grandest seen in Britain since the 2002 death of the Queen Mother.
