Sailboat capsizes while practising for America’s Cup; at least 1 dead

SAN FRANCISCO – A sailor has died after a boat practising for the upcoming America’s Cup races capsized in San Francisco Bay.

San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge says two people were seriously injured Thursday when the Artemis Racing catamaran capsized at about 1 p.m. near Treasure Island, a former naval station in the bay.

Talmadge says both were brought to shore and taken to the St. Francis Yacht Club, where paramedics performed CPR. One person was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Coast Guard says the rest of the crew has been accounted for.

Artemis is a Swedish team that was scheduled to race two boats in the upcoming America’s Cup being held in San Francisco this summer.
