Search for B.C. teen swept away in dangerous current continues in Maple Ridge

VANCOUVER – The search for a B.C. teenager who was swept away while swimming at popular swimming hole in Maple Ridge with a friend has been complicated by dangerous conditions.

RCMP Inspector Davis Wendell says the current is too strong to send in a dive team or use a robotic camera to continue the search as initially planned.

Wendell says crews will instead continue to monitor the currents, and search along the shoreline and from the air in Golden Ears park.

He says the incident is a grave reminder for those in B.C. to be especially careful near fast moving water, especially with the bout of warm weather that has lead to significant snow melts.

The body of the 19-year-old’s friend was recovered Friday and his family has been notified.

Police are not yet releasing the names of the victim or the young man still missing.
