Canadian marathoner Reid Coolsaet breaks collarbone in mountain bike crash

GUELPH, Ont. – Reid Coolsaet has suffered a major setback in his quest for Canada’s marathon record.

The 33-year-old distance runner from Hamilton crashed while mountain biking on Wednesday and broke his collarbone.

Coolsaet wrote a blog post about the incident, saying he hit the brakes after he noticed his shoe was undone. The bike abruptly stopped and sent him flying off it.

“I still remember flying in the air thinking it felt like I was sailing pretty far,” Coolsaet wrote. “I hit the ground with my left shoulder and heard a crack.”

Coolsaet had been training with the Canadian marathon record in his sights. Coolsaet ran two hours 10 minutes 55 seconds at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in 2011, narrowly missing Jerome Drayton’s 38-year-old record of two hours 10 minutes 0.09 seconds. Coolsaet planned to take aim at the record again at the 2013 Toronto Waterfront event in the fall.

The blog post included a gruesome picture of the xray of his collarbone.

“I finally got in for some x-rays and right when I saw them thought ‘How the hell is that supposed to join back together,” Coolsaet wrote.

He was scheduled to see an orthopaedic surgeon Thursday.
