Clement digs in heels with striking diplomats, says he’s not going to ‘fold’

OTTAWA – Treasury Board Secretary Tony Clement is telling striking Canadian diplomats he’s not going to fold “like a $3 suitcase” in their ongoing stalemate.

The minister made the comment in an interview with The Canadian Press.

Clement spoke following a heated Twitter exchange with representatives of the striking Professional Association of Foreign Service Officers and their supporters.

The union’s 1,350 members have been in a legal strike position since April, and have stepped up strike action in Ottawa and about a dozen foreign missions, including Washington and Hong Kong.

The union wants wage parity with counterparts in other federal departments who make as much as $14,000 more for doing similar work.

Clement says the current offer won’t get any better after talks recently broke down when Treasury Board returned to the table without a new offer.
