US man finishes more than 2-day swim to Detroit while hauling bricks

DETROIT – A long-distance U.S. swimmer who calls himself “The Shark” has finished a 22-mile (35-kilometre) swim near the U.S.-Canada border.

Jim Dreyer had been hauling two dinghies since Monday bearing bricks weighing more than a ton. By Wednesday morning, he only was hauling one for the swim’s final stretch.

Dreyer finished late Wednesday morning at Detroit’s Belle Isle, nearly 51 hours after starting.

Dreyer told reporters that he wanted to show “we don’t have to sink with the weight of our burdens.”

Dreyer had expected to finish Tuesday after about 30 hours, but he says waves slowed him down.

Dreyer has made direct crossings of the five Great Lakes. He’s raising money for Habitat for Humanity.
