MONTREAL – Vasek Pospisil kept Canada on a roll at the US$3.49-million men’s Rogers Cup on Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-4 second-round victory over Radek Stepanek.
The 23-year-old from Vancouver reached the third round of a Masters series tournament for the first time by beating the 51st-ranked Stepanek in their first career meeting.
The 71st-ranked Pospisil will next face the winner of a match later Wednesday between fifth-seeded Tomas Berdych and Alexander Dolgopolov.
Pospisil looked to be cruising when he took a 5-2 second-set lead with his fifth service break of the match but then lost on his own serve.
He made no mistakes on his next service game, taking all four points.
Pospisil, coming off a victory in a Challenger series event in Vancouver, scored his first win over a top-20 opponent Tuesday when he ousted American John Isner in three sets.
Pospisil was among a record five Canadians to reach the second round.
Later on Wednesday, Ottawa’s Jesse Levine faces two-time champion Rafael Nadal, Filip Peliwo of Vernon, B.C., plays Denis Istomin, Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., takes on 15th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz and 13th-seeded Milos Raonic goes up against Mikhail Youzhny.
Second-seeded Andy Murray of Scotland was scheduled to see his first action since winning Wimbledon.
