Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch wins Lake Louise World Cup women’s downhill
LAKE LOUISE, Alta. – Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany won the World Cup women’s downhill at Lake Louise, Alta., on Friday.
Hoefl-Riesch posted a winning time of one minute 56.03 seconds.
Marianne Kaufmann-Abderhalden of Switzerland was .70 seconds back in second and Elena Fanchini of Italy was third in 1:57.23.
U.S. ski star Lindsey Vonn finished 41st in her first race since crashing and severely injuring in her knee at the world championships in February.
Larissa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., tied for eighth.
The results were subject to change because of a possible disqualification Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein, who finished fifth.
The race was held under sunny skies, but bitterly cold temperatures with a windchill of minus 31.
A second downhill is scheduled for Saturday followed by a super-G on Sunday.
