Record-breaking ‘heat event’ expected to continue in Okanagan, Kamloops

This past weekend a more than two dozen of daily high temperature records were broken around B.C., and Kamloops and the Okanagan are in for some more heat throughout the week.

There were 26 temperature records broken over the weekend in B.C. including Cache Creek, Lillooet, Lytton and Hope.

Environment Canada meteorologist Brian Proctor said Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon and Penticton didn’t break any records, but the area is in for some above average temperatures and dry conditions.

“Still a lot of heat compared to what we typically would see this time of year. Daytime maxes are normally about 24 for Penticton, 24 for Kelowna and Kamloops should be 25. And these forecasts are all above that at this point in time, right through the weekend into the upcoming work week,” Proctor said.

Kelowna, Vernon and Penticton are expecting sunny skies with daily highs around 30 Celsius all week. In Kamloops, it’s supposed to be a bit warmer with a high of 32 Celsius on Friday, June 19.

It has been a warm, dry year and even though there have been some scattered showers in June, Proctor said it’s looking like the region will fall short of normal precipitation for the month.

“It’s been a really dry June so far,” he said. “I would expect to see below normal for this June for much of southern British Columbia.”

Even though these temperatures aren’t jaw-dropping, since they’re coming so early in the year people might feel them a bit more than they would later in the summer.

“One of the key things with these early season heat events is we’re often not really acclimatized to it,” he said.

“It’s important that people stay hydrated and be prepared to sort of seek shelter if they need to get out of the sun.”
