France beats Iraq 3-0 to move to top spot in Group I with two wins, six goals for and one against. Iraq has two losses and one goal for and seven against. And Norway leads Senegal 1-0 at halftime.

After a two-hour weather delay, France and Iraq are ready to start the second half in Philadelphia. Kylian Mbappé goal in the 14th minute — his third of this World Cup — has given France a 1-0 lead. And the national anthems have been performed at New Jersey Stadium as Norway and Senegal get ready to square off in their Group I match.

France leads Iraq 1-0 at halftime on a goal from star striker Kylian Mbappé, his third of this World Cup. His 15 career World Cup goals are one behind retired German striker Miroslav Klose, and three back of Lionel Messi. The Argentine captain has five goals at this tournament.

5 p.m.

A Group I match between France and Iraq is underway in Philadelphia. France, runner-up in 2022, won its first game 3-1 over Senegal. Star striker Kylian Mbappé scored twice in that game and entered today’s contest with 14 World Cup goals in three tournaments.

Moïse Bombito says he’s ready when called upon as Canada prepares to face Switzerland on Wednesday with first place in Group B on the line. The defender made his World Cup debut against Qatar after recovering from a broken leg suffered while playing for Nice last October. A win or draw against Switzerland would send Canada into the knockout stage atop the group and secure a Round of 32 match in Vancouver.

4:30 p.m.

Christian Pulisic returned to training with the U.S. squad today after missing last week’s World Cup win over Australia with a calf injury. The AC Milan midfielder took part in warm-ups and ball drills as the Americans prepare to wrap up group play Thursday against Turkey. The U.S. has already secured top spot in its group and will play a Round of 32 match July 1 in Santa Clara, Calif.

Lionel Messi scored both goals as Argentina took control of Group J with a 2-0 win over Austria. Messi has scored every goal for the defending champions. He now has five goals at this tournament, and a record 18 in his World Cup career.

Canadian fans are planning a tribute to injured midfielder Ismaël Koné ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup match against Switzerland in Vancouver. The Voyageurs supporters group says it is printing 3,000 No. 8 signs for fans to hold up during the national anthem in support of Koné, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula in Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar. The group is also inviting fans to sign a banner for the Montreal native before the match. Canada can clinch top spot in Group B with a win or a draw against Switzerland.

Mohamed Salah danced in the streets of downtown Vancouver with thousands of Egyptian supporters last night after helping his country earn its first-ever World Cup victory. The Liverpool star emerged outside the Egyptian team’s hotel on Burrard Street and joined fans singing, chanting and waving flags in celebration of Egypt’s 3-1 win over New Zealand. Salah danced with supporters before being lifted onto their shoulders.

1:53 p.m.

Lionel Messi struck in the 38th minute to give defending champion Argentina a 1-0 lead over Austria at halftime of their Group J matchup. Messi, who scored a hat trick in Argentina’s opener against Algeria, now has a record 17 World Cup goals. He could have had more, but he uncharacteristically sent a penalty wide of the goal in the eighth minute.

1:44 p.m.

1:10 p.m.

World Cup visitors across North America are getting a taste of local sports pricing, with some fans balking at beers topping $20 and premium food items ranging from a US$34 lobster roll in Kansas City to US$75 caviar-topped hash browns in Miami. Canadian venues are part of the trend, with a beer at Toronto Stadium costing $24.25 and a brisket sandwich, chips and a bottle of pop selling for nearly $40, while Vancouver offers local specialties such as short rib poutine and maple bacon smokies. Concession costs vary widely by venue, however, with Atlanta standing out for keeping prices low by offering US$3 pizza slices, US$5 cheeseburgers and beers starting at US$8.

Argentina and Austria have kicked off at Dallas Stadium. Defending champion Argentina won their Group J opener in style, with Lionel Messi scoring all the goals in a 3-0 victory over Algeria. Austria also came into today’s match with three points after downing Jordan 3-1 last week.

Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenkovic at his West Block office on Parliament Hill, and they exchanged soccer jerseys. Carney presented Plenkovic with a black Canada jersey that appeared to have signatures. Plenkovic then gave Carney a Croatia jersey that had Carney’s surname on the back, which Plenkovic said was signed by players on that nation’s team two weeks ago. Carney referred to the game as football. Croatia plays Panama on Tuesday in Toronto.

10:15 p.m.

Germany defender Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the rest of the World Cup and is expected to be sidelined for several months with a left ankle injury. The Borussia Dortmund centre back injured the medial ligament in his ankle during Germany’s 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in Toronto on Saturday. Germany has already secured first place in Group E.

8:30 a.m.

French sports media outlet L’Équipe has apologized to Belgium winger Jeremy Doku and distanced itself from comments made by presenter France Pierron about the player’s desire to attend the birth of his first child. Pierron criticized Doku on air after he said he may leave the World Cup if his wife goes into labour. Pierron described childbirth as “a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the dad is useless” when taking part in the television show “L’Équipe de Choc” on Friday. England forward Ollie Watkins defended Doku, saying the birth of a first child is a blessing and a personal matter.

Canada trains in Vancouver today ahead of Wednesday’s Group B finale against Switzerland at the FIFA World Cup. The Canadians sit atop the group standings on goal differential after a 6-0 win over Qatar and can secure first place with a win or draw, earning a round-of-32 game at BC Place on July 2.
