Two men were attacked with bear spray and an edged weapon in two separate but similar early morning assaults in Vernon this week.

Officers called to a report of an assault at around 1:50 a.m. yesterday, Aug. 5, in the 2400 block of 34 Street arrived to find a 43-year-old man had been bear sprayed and had received a non-life-threatening injury from an edged weapon, according to a Vernon RCMP media release.

Even with the help of a police dog, the suspect got away.

The victim was taken to hospital but wouldn’t cooperate with police, RCMP said.

Today, Aug. 6, at around the same time of the morning, a 40-year-old man was assaulted with bear spray and edged weapon and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. RCMP didn’t say if he cooperated with police.

Officers have canvassed for witnesses and video surveillance footage as the investigation continues.

No arrests have been made in connection with the two violent assaults.

“Police are looking at all aspects of investigation including whether these incidents are related,” Vernon RCMP media relations officer Cpl. Tania Finn said in the release.
