PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers men’s basketball coach Steve Pikiell has been diagnosed with cancer and he is working through treatment.

The Scarlet Knights program released a statement from the coach Wednesday, with Pikiell saying he had “great confidence” in associate head coach Brandin Knight, the rest of the staff and athletes as he manages his health.

“I know they will do an amazing job leading our program when I’m not able to,” he said.

Pikiell said he went to doctors a few months ago “after not feeling 100%” before receiving the diagnosis. Pikiell didn’t reveal the type of cancer he is battling, saying only that he had a “successful surgery” and has worked with doctors to have a plan for finishing treatment.

“I will still be involved with the team to the best of my ability as I navigate the challenges of the season through treatment,” he said.

Pikiell, who turns 59 in November, is entering his 11th season as Rutgers coach. His tenure has included reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2021 for the program’s first March Madness appearance in 20 years, then returning the next season for the first back-to-back appearances since 1976.

Pikiell is under contract through the 2030-31 season.
