Former MLA Dan Ashton seeks to return as Penticton’s mayor
Penticton’s incumbent mayor has a challenger as a veteran politician joins the race.
Dan Ashton, former mayor and MLA, is running against Julius Bloomfield to be the next mayor of Penticton.
He is coming out of retirement after stepping down from provincial politics in 2024, having represented Penticton as a BC Liberal in the Legislature for a decade. Before that he was on city council as first a councillor then mayor between 1999 and 2013.
The local election now has a two-candidate mayoral competition and just one day left for candidates to file their nomination papers. The 2022 election had five mayoral candidates, but the choices will be far slimmer this year.
Incumbent Bloomfield is in his first mayoral term after succeeding John Vassilaki in 2022 following four years as a city councillor.
Ashton teased his mayoral run on social media.
“As it also turns out, retirement and I are not the great friends that I thought we might become,” he said.
