OTTAWA — Canada defeated Australia 79-30 in women’s group stage play Thursday at the IWBF Wheelchair Basketball World Championships at Carleton University.

Kady Dandeneau led Canada with 33 points, adding 12 rebounds, six assists and four steals. Arinn Young had 20 points and Cindy Ouellet chipped in with 16.

Canada dominated the glass, outrebounding Australia 44-29. The Canadians also forced Australia into 21 turnovers, translating to 23 points.

“When we play our game defensively, I think that’s where we really excel,” said Dandeneau. “In the beginning, Australia got a few easy looks, but when we started to really take pride in that defence, that’s where we really let loose.”

Georgia Munro Cook had 13 points for Australia.

Canada held a 54-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter after outscoring Australia 19-7 in the third period.

Canada opened the tournament Wednesday with a victory over Spain. The Canadian men’s team (1-0) was scheduled to play Germany on Friday morning.

Competition continues through Sept. 19.
