Sweden midfielder Lucas Bergvall signs new deal with Tottenham after speculation he might leave
LONDON (AP) — Sweden midfielder Lucas Bergvall has signed a new long-term deal with Tottenham after reportedly telling the club in the offseason that he wanted to leave.
Tottenham announced the new deal Friday but did not disclose details. Bergvall’s previous contract was set to expire in 2031.
The 20-year-old Bergvall had drawn interest from Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa during the summer transfer window.
“I think we’re building something great here,” Bergvall said in a Tottenham statement. “It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract.”
Bergvall has made 80 appearances in all competitions since joining the Spurs from Swedish club Djurgarden in 2024.
“I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential,” Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi said.
At the World Cup, Bergvall came on as a substitute for Sweden against Tunisia, Japan and the Netherlands and started in a 3-0 loss to France in the round of 32.
