Phil Foden sent off early in Man United and Man City clash

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Phil Foden was sent off in the first half of the Manchester derby in the Premier League on Sunday for a two-footed kick out on Bruno Fernandes.

But Manchester City still went on to win the match 1-0 with a disputed goal by Erling Haaland.

Foden was shown a straight red in the 23rd minute at Old Trafford when the score was 0-0.

Foden went down under the challenge of Fernandes by the touchline and then kicked out, sending the Manchester United captain to the ground in pain. Referee Michael Oliver immediately brandished the red to the shock of Foden and City’s players, who remonstrated over the decision.

The Premier League confirmed Foden was sent off for “violent conduct,” but the players argued the decision on the field, with City coach Enzo Maresca looking perplexed on the sidelines.

Maresca later said both Foden and Fernandes should have been sent off for the altercation.

Foden eventually left the field to the sound of chanting United fans.

It was City’s fans who had the last laugh, however, after Haaland’s winning goal on the hour.

The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but the decision was overturned after VAR review. United’s players were left furious because Enzo Fernandez was in an offside position in the buildup.

United defender Lisandro Martinez called it an “injustice.”
