Road World Championships get underway Sunday in Montreal

MONTREAL — Montreal is hosting the Road World Championships after four years of preparation.

The event kicks off Sunday with the elite men’s and women’s time trials.

The first races will give the world a chance to see the Promenade fluviale, the Gilles-Villeneuve Circuit, Old Montreal, and Mount Royal, among other sights.

The individual time trials for the under-23 and junior categories will follow on Monday and Tuesday, with the mixed team time trial also taking place Tuesday.

There will be no competition on Wednesday, and the road races will get underway on Thursday with the women’s under-23 and men’s junior categories.

The men’s under-23 and women’s junior categories will follow on Friday, while the men’s and women’s elite road races will round out the event next weekend.

“Here we are, finally,” said the event’s general manager, Joseph Limare, in an interview with The Canadian Press. “There’s a lot of excitement in the air.”

He said he expects the events to be “spectacular.”
