A man accused of torturing another at a Tk’emlups home was convicted by a jury after being put back on trial for a second time.
Devon Jules was staying in a married couple’s home more than two years ago, where he maimed the husband and lured the wife into taking part.
According to court records, a Kamloops jury convicted him on three charges this week, several months after a mistrial earlier this year.
The charges date back to April 2024 when victim Brandon Hoodicoff was held hostage in his own home during the multi-day ordeal that left him battered and maimed, with one ear partially cut off.
That was the doing of his then-wife, Jessica Jules, who previously told the court she did so because she was in fear for her safety and that of her family’s.
Devon, no relation to Jessica, was a past friend of hers and was staying at the home. They spent multiple nights drinking and using drugs and he eventually said the couple would take part in his scheme to sell drugs.
Hoodicoff was the target of the abuse and beatings until he eventually escaped and managed to contact police.
Jessica and Devon were co-accused in the first trial, which took place in February this year. She had emergency health issues at the time and it was unclear when she would return, so the court declared a mistrial. When it returned for a jury trial this fall, only Devon was charged.
He was convicted, Oct. 14, on all three charges including aggravated assault, unlawful confinement and uttering threats. A sentencing date has not been set.
