A family of skeletons beloved by the Summerland community is back to their shenanigans on the front lawn of a house in Trout Creek.
Created by resident Heather Pescada eight years ago, the Peskelly skeleton family spends every October at 6024 Nixon Road doing a variety of creative activities while dressed in different costumes.
This year, the Peskelly’s arrived on a BC Transit bus after touring Canada for a year.
Pescada started the annual fun after seeing another family doing it and said initially, she only planned on setting up the displays for a year. But, to her surprise, the Peskelly family quickly took on a life of their own.
“I love to decorate, it’s a great outlet for my creativity,” she said. “I like giving people fun things to look at.”
The hairdresser stages a different scene with the skeletons every day from mid-October to Halloween night when there is a big party with music and lights, and many in the community look forward to it every year.
“The traffic increases quite a bit at this time, people change the way they drive to work,” she said. “After picking kids up from school they drive by slowly to check it out or stop and let the kids out to see. “
It takes a lot of work and supplies to keep the fun going. Pescada sets everything up herself, buys all the supplies, and on Nov. 1, she packs it back up again.
She said she has rooms full of stacked totes filled with costumes for the Peskelly family. She pulls ideas off of the internet or comes up with them on her own.
“I have rooms of totes stacked five high,” she said. “I call one of them my hoarder room. My husband doesn’t even go in there.”
Last year a local driver for BC Transit that passes the property on route, asked if the Peskelly’s would like to take a bus ride.
This year, Pescado took up the offer, capturing video of the skeletons arriving on the bus while the driver, Trevor Harris, was on a lunch break.
“It was awesome, the driver was awesome,” Pescada said. “It was so much fun. This is all about bringing some festive fun to the community.”
On Halloween night, the Peskelly’s will be staged in a pirate scene amongst lights and music. There will be a treasure chest of bounty for the young ones.
