Highway honouring Gushue’s Olympic curling championship team is finally finished

ST. JOHN’S — The final stretch is completed of a Newfoundland and Labrador highway honouring curling superstar Brad Gushue and his 2006 Olympic team.

Construction on the St. John’s-area roadway began in 2001, when the project was called Bifurcation Road.

Former Progressive Conservative premier Danny Williams named it the Team Gushue Highway after skip Brad Gushue and his team won gold in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.

The slow progress of construction was sometimes the butt of jokes in the province — particularly when Gushue retired earlier this year before the highway was finished.

The highway connects communities in the St. John’s and Mount Pearl area, in eastern Newfoundland.

Brad Gushue is a six-time Brier champion from St. John’s, N.L., and his 2006 team was the first Canadian team to win a gold in men’s curling at the Olympics.
