Coronato has four points to lead Flames to 6-2 victory over Kraken

CALGARY — Determined not to let the injury to goaltender Devin Cooley and Wednesday’s shutout loss in Edmonton derail their momentum, the Calgary Flames got right back to their recent form on Friday.

Matt Coronato paced the offence with a goal and three assists for a career-best four points and Dustin Wolf made 21 stops in his first start in 15 days as the Flames beat the Seattle Kraken 6-2.

It was the fifth victory in six games for the surging Flames.

“We did a lot of good things in Edmonton,” said Joel Farabee, who scored his fourth goal and added two assists. “Obviously we didn’t score, but I felt like our game was right there and the score I don’t think really told the story.”

Back in the cosy confines of the Scotiabank Saddledome, the scene of the club’s four-game win streak prior to Wednesday’s 4-0 setback, momentum was generated early.

Less than two minutes into the game, Calgary’s Adam Klapka dropped the gloves at centre ice with Curtis Douglas – who’s an inch taller at six foot nine – in a heavyweight bout that got the crowd rocking.

“That was an awesome fight,” said Farabee. “We talked before the game how we wanted to bring guys into the fight, and to square off with another guy that is that big and is a tough guy, it’s not an easy job what he does.

“So for him to do that got us going.”

Flames coach Ryan Huska also talked about the significance of that moment.

“It had a feel with the way things started that it might be a slower start, and Adam took it upon himself, and I think that’s important,” he said. “He had energy in the first period when not a lot of other guys did, and I think he helped push the rest of the team forward.”

Douglas was handed an extra minor for the altercation and it took just 46 seconds for the Flames’ power play to take advantage.

“Klapper did a great job, right off the bat, getting us going,” said Coronato, who combined with Farabee to set up Morgan Frost’s goal at 2:32 that gave the home side a 1-0 lead.

Calgary’s play with the man advantage continued to impress in the second period. The second of three goals in a span of less than five minutes was Matvei Gridin’s power-play marker, set up by Coronato and Farabee.

“Every guy out there can score. Everyone’s got a good shot. Everyone’s a good playmaker too,” said Coronato. “What we’ve been doing lately, we’ve been simple with it, and we’ve done a good job getting bodies in front of the net.”

The Flames are 9-for-20 on the man advantage over the past seven games. They’re third in the NHL on the season at 33.3 percent behind Edmonton (35.7) and Utah (34.0).

It had been an auspicious start to the season for Wolf, who’s in the first year of a seven-year US$52.5-million contract. He lost four of his first five games and was relegated to the bench for five games in a row as Cooley heated up.

But with Cooley (lower body) placed on injured reserve after being hit by Colton Dach on Wednesday, it’s Wolf’s time to shine.

“My emphasis tonight, as (Cooley) says, was not to think. And you know, as simple as that sounds, it’s not as easy,” said Wolf, who entered the night with an .839 save percentage, second-last among 47 goalies with at least five starts.

Two weeks between starts is unusual for Wolf, but he used the time to work on his game.

“You don’t normally get those opportunities in a season,” Wolf said. “Certainly wasn’t the start of the year that I wanted. But now we move forward and just focus on the next one.”

Aydar Suniev and Ryan Strome also scored for Calgary. The Flames will kick off a three-game road trip in Colorado on Saturday.

“When you score six, I just think everyone’s confidence is just a little bit more than it was before.” said Farabee. “A couple guys score and everyone’s feeling good on the bench, and obviously with a tough back-to-back here, we need that energy and that confidence.”
