Mastantuono’s late winner ends Fiorentina’s 52-day winless run

Midfielder Franco Mastantuono broke a deadlock late and Fiorentina defeated Sassuolo 4-2 on Monday, snapping a 52-day winless run that had them hovering in the Serie A relegation zone.

The score was tied by halftime and again in the 65th minute thanks to Armand Laurienté’s second goal for host Sassuolo.

Mastantuono, playing his first Serie A campaign after arriving from Real Madrid, got the decisive goal in the 79th. Teenage midfielder Víctor Valdepeñas sealed the win in stoppage time.

Fiorentina, on its second coach of the season, had not tasted victory since Sept. 11. The Tuscan side has risen to 16th in the 20-team top flight.

Sassuolo suffered a fourth consecutive defeat and sat 17th on goal difference.

Deportivo wins in La Liga

Bil Nsongo scored in the final minutes to cap Deportivo La Coruña’s 2-1 comeback win at home against Osasuna and end a six-game winless streak in La Liga.

Nsongo, who played a key role in the team’s promotion in May, netted in the 87th.

Deportivo last won in the league on Sept. 6. Despite the poor run, it moved into eighth place.

Osasuna has only one win in its last five matches.

Everton tops Newcastle again

Thierno Barry scored in the 49th minute and that was enough for Everton to beat Newcastle 1-0 for the second time in less than a week.

Everton, which lost to Chelsea and Arsenal in its last two Premier League games, climbed above Newcastle in the standings and to seventh place after nine rounds.

Newcastle also lost to Everton on Thursday, 3-1 in the English League Cup.

Brest gets important win

Second-half goals from Ludovic Ajorque and Noah Edjouma helped Brest secure a 2-0 victory over Lorient in the ninth round of Ligue 1.

Brest was 10th in the standings, ahead of Lorient on goal difference.
