Once banned in Vernon, MMA series back for another round

Fighters are back on the mat in the Vernon octagon as an Okanagan MMA league nears another round.

The Okanagan Fighting Championship is putting on its fourth fight night in two years, and it’s the fifth to be hosted in the city since a ban was lifted in 2019.

More than two dozen athletes will face off in the Vernon Recreation Centre cage matches, with many training out of the same gym pro fighter Rylie Marchand got her start, Unity MMA.

There are others from elsewhere in Canada, plus several from Kelowna’s Toshido MMA, whose amateurs are following in the footsteps of alumni like Matt Dwyer and Rory MacDonald who went on to UFC and other leagues.

The card includes Vernon’s own Dominic Perry, a lightweight with four wins and no losses, taking on “The Maritime Menace” Charles Gallagher, of New Brunswick. Another Vernon fighter, Riley Huston, will face Albertan Terell Jonasson in the light-heavyweight class.

The Nov. 14 fight card will host 12 amateur mixed martial arts fights and three of each kickboxing and grappling. Fans can check it out live or watch via pay-per-view. More information can be found here.
