OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Gov. Gen. David Johnston are welcoming home the last Canadian troops from Afghanistan.
They are among the families and friends filling a hangar in Ottawa for an emotional reunion.
The final 93 soldiers, who touched down on Canadian soil in a burly C-17 transport plane, are being greeted with cheers, tears and welcome home signs.
The plane was escorted by a pair of CF-18 fighter jets.
The Canadians formally lowered their flag in Kabul last week, marking the end of a long mission that cost the lives of 158 soldiers.
Families of some of those casualties are also on hand to greet the last detachment.
